1988 - classic vintage synth CASIO VZ1 (DX7 competitor)

Mega underrated device! This synth really is something special. Take some time diving into it and you will find some diamonds! The graphical display of envelopes is so far ahead of its time, makes a change from a tiny 16x2 LCD as found on countless other synths of the period. I've heard it used it a lot for evolving pads and atmospheres, where the multistage envelopes are incredibly useful.. The capabilities if the synthesis engine are mind boggling. It can also simulate acoustic sounds somewhat better than a DX synth. E.g. in one of the orchestral patches, you can actually hear and almost feel the cello bows rubbing against the strings. This is quite amazing given that the CZ-1 has only 8 waveforms to start with, of which 3 are only noise. It also has 8-stage envelopes which rarely any other synth has, and you can emulate delay with as many as 8 envelope points. Very detailed sound design is possible.. An extremely powerful synthesizer and unique in its category. It's Casio's answer to the Yamaha DX synthesizers. It uses Phase Distortion, Additive and Ring Modulation techniques - and its 8 oscillators per voice are freely patched like a modular synthesizer(!) In addition to XLR out, there's 2 independent outputs. Using the "Combination" mode, you can assign one patch to output 1 and another to output 2. You can detune, transpose, even delay either patch to create an amazing stereo synth. It's certainly not another dull ROMpler that's for sure. This thing is a must for every synth freak, very much a secret weapon in many studios I imagine. People hardly mention the Graphic Display mode, which allows you to view the envelope shape for example. You can even zoom in and out - how many 80's era synths do you know of that have a graphic display for the envelope?! There's a dedicated button for this, which along with the other 16 dedicated editing buttons actually make tweaking this synth a lot easier than you might think. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Polyphony - 16 voices Multitimbral - 8 parts duo-phonic Oscillators - 8 iPD Modules across 4 Pairs Waveforms - 1 sine, 5 saw, 1 noise, 1 noise + sine LFO - 2 LFO generators for Tremelo and Pitch Envelope - 9x 8-stage envelopes (8 amp, 1 global pitch) Keyboard - 61 keys with velocity and aftertouch, 3 wheels Memory - 64 preset patches, 64 user patches, 64 patch external cartridge (via RC-100 ROM card) Control - MIDI In, Out and Thru Date Produced - 1988 - 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Only selling as I'm clearing some items out, making space for some new bits.. Sadly 1 key is stuck, but I think this can be fixed by opening the keyboard up and just cleaning it around a bit, hence low price. Collection preferred as it i quite heavy, though shipping can be discussed using a courier etc. I've done it before so no problem :-)
